I would definitely go to an animal shelter to find the perfect cat for you 
The neat thing is, cats at shelters like the humane society usually have been tested for temperment, including if they like dogs, kids, etc. Also some shelters have play rooms that you can get to know cats in before you adopt. Cats from breeders actually have a greater chance of having problems due to inbreeding and other genetic problems due to the efforts of keeping a certain look or characteristic within a certain group of cats. Also, if you adopt from a shelter, they usually come with their shots, fixed and dewormed. They are all set and ready to go, and you can feel good that you gave a poor cat a 2nd chance at a life it most likely would not have found without you! Good luck!
