Big Hamster Cage
A black bear hamster feels most comfortable in a cage or in a terrarium. The big advantage of getting a cage rather than a terrarium is that it is more portable and has a front opening for easy access. Also you can bring a cage along with you if you have to travel for an extended period of time. On the other hand, a glass box like a terrarium confines your hamster’s bad habits and prevents it from throwing things out of its environment. A terrarium also provides for a more peaceful shelter for your pet as they are not as distracted from the activities of humans around its housing.
Depending on the size of your black bear hamster, you should make sure that your precious pet has enough floor space to run and dig around. A reasonable area would measure at least 16 inches by 24 inches and 24 inches in height. Remember that although you are strongly encouraged to take your hamster out of its cage to interact and play with it, your pet should not be left outside of its housing habitat for too long because you might lose them (the little critters can be very fast!).
For the more ambitious, try building your hamster a customized housing unit. Before you begin this endeavor, make sure you check with your local pet store on the appropriate materials you should use. For instance, plywood and wood from conifers are definitely not suitable because the glue and resin are extremely poisonous to hamsters. A good alternative is to use a standard water-soluble white wood glue. Solid wood like birch and beech wood are usually recommended by knowledgeable pet store experts.
In order to create a cozy interior, cover the inside of the habitat with enough wooden litter (your local pet store should be able to advise on the most suitable and common material). Using cat litter to coat the habitat floor is a definite no-no because the hamster will gnaw and eat the chunks which harms their teeth. Just like humans, hamsters like their living space clean and tidy so do not forget to do some hamster housekeeping at least every other day.
While the interior of the hamster habitat is the most important factor to get right, it is also vital to make sure the area surrounding the cage or terrarium is well-lit and has a constant, moderate temperature (preferably between 18 to 26 C). Remember that hamsters cannot take too much heat and are also especially sensitive to air draft.
